I actually really liked this and found it provided simple relief from books which make you think too hard about what the author might mean. It has been criticised for being saccharine and glaringly obvious but as a busy parent I can't be bothered with novels I can't pick up and put down when the baby cries. This is engaging enough and simple enough that if you can't come back to it for a week you will still know where you are up to.

Syrupy emotional blackmail, it's exactly how a British comedian would write if he was doing a parody of the American sentimentalist stereotype. There are so many ways to write an uplifting, optimistic tale without resorting to saccharine. You can have your heartstrings pulled far more pleasantly in a lot of sci-fi or fantasy, and there's usually a lot more imagination, humour and a cracking adventure too - why settle for such a lazy writer?

I loved this book! Yes, it was a little cliched, but I found it heart warming and poignant

I thought it was great! But I thought his other book "Tuesdays with Morrie" was just dreadful.
