Champagne is a great gift normally, but not so fantastic if the mother is breastfeeding! I would steer clear of champagne as a gift for new parents and instead do a combination of something for the new baby, something for younger siblings to keep them occupied (stickers? colouring?) and a pampering present for the new mum (hand-cream, shower gel etc!)

Oh yes, a fab present. I was bought a bottle of Mumm champagne by DH. I was in hospital for a week, and when I came home the first thing I had was my evening tea of runny egg sandwich and a glass of champagne to celebrate the coming home of our dearest first born!

Probably not the best present to give someone who is breast-feeding. Said mummy will enjoy one small glass and then jealously look on as her partner and gift giver polish off the rest of the bottle. However, not a bad gift if it is kept until the breast feeding ends.

I celebrated each birth with gifted Champagne; by the third it was tradition!

Makes a great change from flowers - a friend appeared at the hospital with a bottle and we were able to wet the baby's head with all our visitors that day. "Great to cheer you up in hospital, celebrate the birth and help you sleep that first night". "When I had just had my baby, someone arrived with a bottle. It was fabulous to be able to close the hospital curtains around the bed and have a sneaky glass of bubbly and toast our newborn into the world!"
