This book is worth it for the Great Grandmother's cake recipe. Beats delia and nigella hands down. Can't decide if her wheaten bread recipe is better than my mothers though.

This has become such a cooking bible in our house. I use it or reference nearly every day.Want perfect rice or can't remember the quantities for pastry- check this book. From the basic sauces like mayonnaise and bechamel to catering for a large Christmas party: this book has it all.

The photography is also superb and portrays the idyllic life of the author in East Cork. You may be familiar with Darina's daughter in law - Rachel Allen. Many of Rachel's recipes have been gleaned from her mother in law and are featured in this book.

I particularly like the constant emphasis on locally sourced sustainable produce, as well as the great selection of baking recipes from years gone by. A very reliable book and one that is sure to inspire.
