Carter Beats the Devil - Glen David Gold
With the Mumsnet
Book Club already thriving, we thought it about time we started reviewing grown up books and for this category we're looking for books published in the last year or so that are easy reads, something uplifting to take to a sunny beach, or to pick up in a quiet moment at home (should you be lucky enough to have one of those). At some point when we've reached a critical mass we'll be handing out a dazzling literary award to the winning book (watch out Mr Booker) so please add as many reviews as you like and feel free to comment on other folks' choices. As ever, if you have any suggestions for new categories you'd like to see, please send them over to contactus@mumsnet.com.

The debut novel by Glen David Gold which begins 1920s America and follows stage magician Carter the Great, who is forced to go on the run after the death of American President Harding during one of his shows. The book then veers off into Carters past as we learn of his childhood and his gradual rise to the heights of vaudeville magician extraordinaire before finally bringing the reader back to the present for the grand finale.
This is a fantastically evocative book, with a guest appearance from Houdini himself, in which the authors love of the subject clearly shines through. Recommended.
