With the Mumsnet
Book Club already thriving, we thought it about time we started reviewing grown up books and for this category we want to know what you think is the best book ever written (plenty of scope there then). At some point when we've reached a critical mass we'll be handing out a dazzling literary award to the winning book (watch out Mr Booker) so please add as many reviews as you like and feel free to comment on other folks' choices. As ever, if you have any suggestions for new categories you'd like to see, please send them over to contactus@mumsnet.com.

Good but derivative. Incredibly overlong and tedious bit about the wheely things - only bothered to keep ploughing on because my brother gave the trilogy to me and raved about it. Most friends adore it and girls named Lyra popping up everywhere. But his was the most disappointing and overrated book I have ever read, apart from Captain Corelli - awful. Wanted so much to love it but thought everyone who likes it must have been brainwashed. The 'People's Heaven' bit was the final straw. Was it edited by Tony Blair?

Classics of the future. When I read these books I immediately thought of the pleasure my kids would get from them in years to come. Wonderful depth of imagination. These books can be enjoyed as adventures in their own right for younger children but also contain fairly dark themes for more mature readers. It's an overused description in book reviews, but this trilogy truly is a masterpiece.

These three novels are a better read for adults than even the Harry Potter books in my opinion. Overall, I prefer the first book - The Golden Compass - but I am so glad I read them all.
The adventure is gripping and thoughtfully written with lots of ideas to mull over.
I know these books are aimed at children, but I think the subtleties of the story and its description of growing up, is more suited to secondary school ages.
