A Fine Balance - Rohinton Mistry

Product reviews - Books - Best book ever - A Fine Balance - Rohinton Mistry

With the Mumsnet Book Club already thriving, we thought it about time we started reviewing grown up books and for this category we want to know what you think is the best book ever written (plenty of scope there then). At some point when we've reached a critical mass we'll be handing out a dazzling literary award to the winning book (watch out Mr Booker) so please add as many reviews as you like and feel free to comment on other folks' choices. As ever, if you have any suggestions for new categories you'd like to see, please send them over to contactus@mumsnet.com.

Extraordinary - the sort of book where you think about the characters when you're not reading it and feel sorry to have finished it.

I bought this book after reading the reviews on this website. And was not disappointed. I have struggled to stick to reading any one book since I got pregnant, but this is beautifully written and holds the reader from start to finish. I would thoroughly recommend it.

Quite simply the best book I have ever read, and I have read a few! Unlike some books that are so good you don't want to put them down, I tried to read this as slowly as I could, because I didn't want for it to end. I buy it for friends and family, as I think everyone should read it.

This book taught me some of the shocking recent history of India, and about the political repression that has taken place in my lifetime. I was ashamed that I knew little to nothing about it. It spurred me into findng out more! This was my first RM, and I subsequently read the rest - all 10/10. He is a Parsi, so reading his books about family life will also tell you a lot about Zoroastrianism. Fabulous! I just wish he'd write some more!

Love, love this book! Beautifully written, sensitive, thought provoking and funny all at once. Slightly trite ending but almost perfect.
