Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
With the Mumsnet
Book Club already thriving, we thought it about time we started reviewing grown up books and for this category we want to know what you think is the best book ever written (plenty of scope there then). At some point when we've reached a critical mass we'll be handing out a dazzling literary award to the winning book (watch out Mr Booker) so please add as many reviews as you like and feel free to comment on other folks' choices. As ever, if you have any suggestions for new categories you'd like to see, please send them over to contactus@mumsnet.com.

This is an okay book, will always be mentioned within any top 100 books of all time list (and will no doubt always hover around the top ten) but it did not excite me as much as it has so clearly to the other reviewers. I just think that there is so much more out there that is on a par and beyond but just never seems to be mentioned.

This book is a lifelong delight for me. The plot is brilliant, the characters and their development are handled very well, and the clever use of language is a joy. It is full of cheeky humour, and is one of those books that makes you stop and read out short passages to whoever else happens to be in the room with you. At the same time, the language is quite accessible and easy to follow for those who are not used to reading older literature.
