Never ask a child IF they need the loo... moodlum

Quote of the week

CaptainNancy's (admirably succinct) family rules: "Don't be a dingbat/duffer. Keep calm and carry on. Dream big. Shut up and get on with it."

Recipe of the week

Carmenere's cinder toffee: sweet, sticky, made-in-five-minutes toffee squares that'll spark off a few 'yums' among the 'oohs' and 'aahs' of your little fireworks-watchers.

Fabulous value for a football game. Slightly addictive (but in a good way) and gives a feel for match play. Great for football bonding (even if you enter into the spirit somewhat reluctantly). Beats shivering on a cold field on a Saturday morning while you watch your Dcs perform (although of course that is the healthier option for them, at least!).

Completely addictive if my 6 year old is anything to go by and has even managed to get his dad to admit that all video games are not the devil's work (though he still can't beat the 6 year old!) Brilliant for keeping football mad children happy on long journeys - and even better when you can turn the sound off!

Given how much time ds spends on this, I'll have to give it 10/10.

The teams and the stadiums are as up to date as possible and you can take part in the cups and the league. It didn't take ds long to figure out that he could give his team a starting advantage (in goals, in some of the competitions, not all of them) so that he always achieved a win (!), something I wish they would disable but other than that, this is ds's favourite nintendo game by miles and I'm sure, Fifa09 will be top of his birthday list come the end of the year! (Ds is 6 btw).

A very addictive game that is easy to pick up but hard to master. The commentator voices are great - a very passable impression of Andy Gray and Clive Tyldesley - which adds to the authenticity (although the comments they make are on a loop so actually can become quite irritating after a while). But I find it quite exciting watching my kids play it, so it must be even better when you get your hands on the controls yourself... One day!

Ds loves it and although the noise is irritating (get him to switch it off!) and the game is addictive, it does teach ds about countries, cities and allows creativity in designing new strips - at the same time as indulging his passion for football.
