I really like this book – it is very accessible yet intelligent. It does exactly what it says on the tin… it helps calm challenging children. More importantly, it helps calm a challenged mum too, by giving reassurance and help! With all the useful hints and tips and clear explanations, this book has been added to my list of essential tools (along with velcro and Tesco direct!).

What makes it stand out from all the other parenting books out there are the many cartoons which illustrate the advice given about how to react, behave and talk to children through the difficult times. The illustrations and speech bubbles simplify the process of digesting the large amount of practical information and emotionally supportive advice. Some of the facial expressions of the characters capture exactly how I feel in my own challenging situations.

The book helps understand how children feel and think. It covers parenting skills such as descriptive praise, what to do when your child’s agenda clashes with your own, how to deal with emotions, how to prevent difficult situations from arising in the first place and how to learn from mistakes. I already lent it to a friend who loved it too.
