Quote of the week

CaptainNancy's (admirably succinct) family rules: "Don't be a dingbat/duffer. Keep calm and carry on. Dream big. Shut up and get on with it."

Recipe of the week

Carmenere's cinder toffee: sweet, sticky, made-in-five-minutes toffee squares that'll spark off a few 'yums' among the 'oohs' and 'aahs' of your little fireworks-watchers.

This was and easy read with a list of 100 rules. I think the title should be taken with a pinch of salt, since this is really a book on parenting and empowering children to be successful. However the book is part of the authors series of books on rules, so it sits in with his collection.

The 'rules' are a summary of certain parenting issues, with the authors view on different ways to deal with each situation. You don't have to follow his 'rules' to get results and some of them are common sense to be honest. What this book does offer is an insight on ways to deal with everyday situations in a light hearted and frank approach to family life for instance "You are allowed to hide from your kids", "Don't be a nag" and "Look pleased to see them" are highly insightful and funny. Available in your library - and a good read for anyone with a toddler, child or teen.
