This excellent collection of essays often summed up how I was feeling about the various aspects of new motherhood after the birth of my first child. Although it can be fairly hard-going and serious at times, the book is thorough and thought-provoking, and often manages to convey, succinctly and clearly, the various emotions and experiences at this time in your life. As such, it provides reassurance that you are not "alone" on this most challenging and exhilarating of life's journeys. This was probably the most helpful book I read in the first year of my child's life, as it helped give me confidence without telling me how to raise my child.
