Tip of the day

When you find a red plastic shovel and two Barbies in the cat litter tray, it's time to put a child gate across the doorway. Mmmcoffee

Quote of the week

CaptainNancy's (admirably succinct) family rules: "Don't be a dingbat/duffer. Keep calm and carry on. Dream big. Shut up and get on with it."

Recipe of the week

Carmenere's cinder toffee: sweet, sticky, made-in-five-minutes toffee squares that'll spark off a few 'yums' among the 'oohs' and 'aahs' of your little fireworks-watchers.

Brilliant book - the only one I have used throughout my pregnancy so far and there hasn't been one thing that I've looked up that wasn't referenced.

Would thoroughly recommend it without hesitation! Only down side is that it's written by Americans so weights are in kilos and there are some American phrases.

On the one hand this book is brilliant. There is so much information and it covers every worry or question you could possibly have during pregnancy. The month by month and question and answer style layout makes it very easy to find the information you need and it's fascinating reading each new section as you reach the relevant month. The pre-pregnancy information is some of the best I have found, so I would definitely recommend this book if you are trying to conceive, don't wait until you are pregnant before buying it.

The only downside to this book is that it can sometimes really worry you. There are quite strong ideas about what you should eat, drink etc., and I did quite often read sections and worry that I had done the wrong thing or hadn't done something that I should have done. Definitely get this book, but make sure you read other pregnancy books alongside it - they'll reassure you when you start to worry!

a brilliant book, month by month progress for the average child, question and answer sessions, comprehensive coverage of everything you could want, both as reference as as casual reading matter. I particularly liked the way that no single point of view was pushed - eg this was helpful with a breast-fed baby who didn't like formula, or a baby that didn't need much sleep - didn't feel such a failure when one method didn't work!!
