After using disposables with my first son, I fully intended to use washable nappies this time around... Until I found out I was having twins!
To soothe my conscience a little I thought I'd at least try a more ecological disposable nappy, but if I'm honest I fully expected them to be pretty poor in comparison to other disposables. I bought a pack of 52 Moltex Oko nappies in Midi (9lb - 20lb) and I was very, very impressed!
The main difference is the colour - as they are unbleached, they are light brown. Apart from that they look just like regular disposables and are shaped the same and feature the same re-sealable tabs. They seem comfortable for both my twins. I was impressed that the packaging is also fully compostable. I also found these nappies smelt better when dirty - as they don't emit the 'wet chemical' smell I have noticed with other brands.
Performance-wise they 'hold their own' well against the bigger brands like Pampers and Huggies in terms of absorption, however, one advantage Pampers have over them is that Pampers nappies actually draw soft breastfed poo away from the baby's skin whereas these aren't quite that sophisticated.
On reflection this seems a small sacrifice though for what are otherwise very good nappies that can be used with a slightly clearer conscience than other disposables for around 20p per poop!

Quite bulky compared to some nappies and still have the chemical smell to them which I found disappointing. Overall I liked them, but they do get expensive.

I have been using moltex since my daughter was about one month - we used pampers before as Moltex seem only to go from size 2, rather than size 1 and the ones we had were too massive.
They have been just as good as the chemical-filled ones, and hold an impressive amount of wee! Highly recommended for those with an uneasy conscience, who don't want to go down the reusable route.

This is now my second baby and I wouldn't use any other nappies. I used washables for my first and he developed horrendous nappy rash. I don't know whether it was as a result of this, but as soon as I swapped to moltex it cleared. My newborn (now 5 months) has never had any problems since moltex. Also I do find that although they are more expensive I think they are more cost effective as they don't need changing as often as the "commercial" nappies.

I used to use these at night, as I wasn't happy with DD in a washable over night, but now I just use them when away from home but still, wouldn't swap them for anything else. Soft, non-smelly, easy to get a good fit (apart from on a 6lb 11 newborn - had to use nature babycare for the first few weeks) and don't seem to irritate anywhere. Now if they could get DD to lie down and stay still...
