Quote of the week

CaptainNancy's (admirably succinct) family rules: "Don't be a dingbat/duffer. Keep calm and carry on. Dream big. Shut up and get on with it."

Recipe of the week

Carmenere's cinder toffee: sweet, sticky, made-in-five-minutes toffee squares that'll spark off a few 'yums' among the 'oohs' and 'aahs' of your little fireworks-watchers.

Don't be put off if you've seen her on her TV show, this book is fantastic. Focussing on simple food and classics it has a great selection of recipes including ones for Christmas, birthdays and entertaining. They are all easy to follow and actually work (it's the kind of cook book where I have cooked new recipes when people are coming around as I know it'll work).

The style of the book is warm and friendly - this is written by someone who clearly knows/loves food but still appreciates it. If I had to keep just one book this would be it.

It has the best chocolate birthday cake ever in it too!
