Gosh, I'm surprised people hated this. I thought it was really interesting how leprosy treatment has changed over the years, and that thalidomide was the cure. I'm always interested in island communities, and thought this described an interesting example of type. I didn't think the writing was poor - it didn't remind me of Dan Brown at all.

I found this to be very predictable and boring read. From the moment they mention "the island" you know it's bad and as soon as they introduce the family characters you know what is going to happen.
I usually get quite attached to characters in a good story and feel depressed when I finish a book and have no way of knowing what happens to these people. In this book it was a relief to be finished!

I disagree with the other reviews. I found this book easy to read and quite enjoyable. Not the best book ever, but certainly not the worst.

Having enjoyed this book I did decide to give it away as it's a definite once only read. The prose was not that polished and it was not a hugely satisfying read; but it deals quite sensitively with the subject matter and makes a change to all the chick lit washing around. Not a worst book of the year - I'm writing this to give it a fair hearing!!
