A *very* funny and highly readable book about one day in the life of drab Miss Pettigrew, who is suddenly sucked into the somewhat louche world of dashing men & martinis before midday when she helps a glamorous young actress to juggle her many lovers.
This fabulous book vividly evokes interwar London's jazz clubs and assignations; and is paced so fast I gobbled it up in one sitting.

A redicovered gem from the 1930s. Miss Pettigrew is a malnourished, out-of-work governess whose life is transformed in the course of 24 hours following a chance meeting with a glamorous young actress. This book made me laugh out loud and is much loved by everyone I've recommended it to. It's also a very beautiful book with the original illustrations, so it would make a lovely gift.

This early 20th-century novel, about to be released as a film, is a witty account of the experiences of a frumpy governess who finds herself working for a glamorous single mother who sings in nightclubs and dabbles in cocaine. Pretty racy stuff for the time. It's a lighthearted, read-in-one-sitting-with-large-box-of-chocolates thing.
